MUMBAI – Prices of tur fell in key spot markets across the country Wednesday, while chana and urad were steady, traders said. Prices of tur fell due to muted demand and availability of cheaper imports from African countries, they said. Prices of chana and urad were steady as demand remained stable, they said.
CHANA prices in Delhi were steady at INR 5,810-INR 5,820 per 100 kg, said Aniket Mehta, a local trader. Prices have been range-bound for a week, fluctuating by INR 25 per 100 kg every day, he said. "There is hardly any movement in demand," he said.
Prices usually rise during this time of the year, as consumption of chana and besan-based food items increases during monsoon, he said. However, the availability of yellow peas is eating into the demand for chana, preventing a substantial price increase, he said. In the financial year 2024-25 (Apr-Mar), India imported 2.16 million tonnes of yellow peas, up 85% from the previous year. Imports of yellow peas stand the highest among all pulses.
Prices of chana at Indore in Madhya Pradesh were steady at INR 5,950-INR 6,000 per 100 kg, traders said.
TUR prices at Akola in Maharashtra fell by INR 50 from Tuesday to INR 6,825-INR 6,850 per 100 kg, said Ankit Kedia, a local trader. Arrivals fell by 300 bags to 1,500 bags (1 bag = 50 kg), he said. Prices are down on sluggish demand and the availability of cheaper imports, he said. Prices of tur from African countries are cheaper than the domestic variety, ranging from INR 5,700 per 100 kg to INR 6,400 per 100 kg.
Prices of tur could rise by mid-August as stocks with retailers are depleting, he said. However, a steep rise in prices is unlikely as more shipments of tur from African nations are also expected by the end of August, he said.
Prices of tur at Kalaburagi in Karnataka fell by INR 59 per 100 kg from the previous day to INR 6,000-INR 6,602 per 100 kg, according to the India Pulses and Grains Association.
URAD prices at Chandausi in Uttar Pradesh were steady at INR 7,075-INR 7,100 per 100 kg, traders said. Prices of urad at Jaipur in Rajasthan were also steady at INR 6,600-INR 7,400 per 100 kg.
Urad prices are expected to remain range-bound in the short term as millers are making need-based purchases amid the ongoing summer arrivals and slow demand for processed urad dal, the association said in its weekly report Monday. However, shipments of higher-priced imports from Myanmar are expected to be delivered next week, which could test millers' demand, it said. End
