MUMBAI – Headline indices failed to sustain majority of the intraday gains with the Nifty 50 ending marginally down, while Sensex came off highs and closed with slight gains. The fall in index-heavyweight Reliance Industries and information technology stocks offset gains in select automobile stocks and banks.

"Market is consolidating right now. The selling pressure in mid and small-caps has become subdued in the past few days...but the overall sentiment and investor confidence is low," Narendra Solanki, head of fundamental research (Investment Services) at Anand Rathi Share & Stock Brokers, said. He iterated that worries around earnings growth and threats of tariffs continue to affect sentiment in the market.

Tuesday, the Nifty 50 closed at 22547.55 points, down 5.80 points, while the BSE Sensex ended at 74602.12 points, up 147.71 points or 0.2%. Earlier during the day, the Nifty rose 0.3% to an intraday high of 22625.30 points and the BSE Sensex rose 0.4% to an intraday high of 74785.08 points. The broader market indices could not sustain early gains and fell. The Nifty mid-cap indices ended down 0.5-0.6% and the small-cap indices closed down 0.4% each.

Shares of Dr. Reddy's Laboratories fell 3% to close at one-month low of INR 1,128.15. Shares of Hindalco Industries ended down nearly 4%. Few index-heavyweights such as Reliance Industries and Tata Consultancy Services ended down 1%, which pulled down the Nifty 50 index.

Shares of Bharti Airtel ended up 2.5%, snapping a six-day losing streak during which it lost nearly 7%. Shares of automaker Mahindra & Mahindra ended up 2.5%. Mahindra and Mahindra's stock has fallen nearly 15% from its 52-week high of INR 3,270. The stock saw a continuous sell-off as investors feared that the entry of Tesla into the domestic market would impact the sales of Mahindra and Mahindra's premium electric cars. But some analysts see this fall as a buying opportunity because they don't expect much impact from Tesla's entry into India as their cars would be costly than those of Mahindra and Mahindra.

Shares of Adani Power ended up nearly 6%, snapping a two-day losing streak. The Adani Group proposed investing INR 500 billion in Assam on airports, aerocities, city gas distribution, power transmission, cement, and road projects, said Gautam Adani, chairman of the group, in a press release.

Shares of Vijaya Diagnostic ended up 15% and were among the top perfomers in the Nifty 500 index. The stock was the sole Nifty 500-member to end with double-digit gains. Shares of Tata Investment Corp. sustained early gains and ended up 7%. Media reports said Tata Capital's board approved its initial public offering consisting of a fresh issue of up to 230 million shares.

Banking stocks were mixed. While shares of ICICI Bank and HDFC Bank ended up 0.5% and 0.3%, respectively, those of State Bank of India and Axis Bank ended down 0.8% and 0.1%. Shares of Varun Beverages and Petronet LNG ended down over 4% each. Shares of Dr. Lal Pathlabs ended down nearly 7%, ending down for the third straight session. Shares of Triveni Engineering & Industries also ended down 6%.

Among sectoral indices, the Nifty Metal and Nifty Realty ended down 1.5% and 1.3%, respectively, and were the worst-performing sectoral indices. Most of their constituents ended in the red. On other hand, Nifty Media, Nifty Consumer Durables, and Nifty Auto ended 0.5-0.8% higher.
