NEW DELHI – Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada has revised upwards its production estimate for masur in 2022-23 (Aug-Jul) to 2.55 mln tn, 2% higher than last month's forecast, due to a likely increase in sowing area, it said in a report for April.   

Canada's farm agency projected acreage of masur in 2022-23 at 1.82 mln ha, 0.8% higher than the previous month's outlook.

Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada is a Canadian government agency responsible for policies governing the production, processing, and marketing of all farm, food, and agri-based products.

Area under masur in Saskatchewan is expected to account for 89% of the output, while Alberta and Manitoba are likely to account for the rest, the agency said.

However, output of dry peas is pegged 7.9% lower at 3.50 mln tn in 2022-23 from 3.80 mln tn projected last month, as producers across the country are likely to decrease the sowing area.

Production of the pulse, however, is seen increasing 55% on year. Output of dry peas in 2021-22 is estimated at 2.23 mln tn, the report said.

Similarly, the agency's April report estimated chana production in 2022-23 at 110,000 tn, as against 125,000 tn in the previous month's prediction due to a likely decrease in sowing area. Acreage of the commodity is pegged lower at 71,000 ha, as against 85,000 ha in the previous month's report. 

Output for dry beans has been pegged at 325,000 tn, compared with 390,000 tn estimated in March, the April report said.  End
