MUMBAI – India's rubber imports are likely to decline for the third consecutive year in 2021-22 (Apr-Mar). The imports are estimated at 350,000 tn, 15% lower than the previous year, an industry source told Informist.

The likely decline in imports is because the country's production of natural rubber is seen increasing to 780,000 tn in 2021-22 from 715,000 tn the previous year, the source said. The new estimate is higher than the 760,000 tn projected earlier.

The output of natural rubber is expected to be higher as overall tappable area is seen increasing to 716,400 ha in 2021-22 from 692,900 ha a year ago. Weather conditions are also expected to be favourable, which will be conducive for production.

Preventive measures such as controlling diseases on rubber plantations, promoting self-tapping, and programmes to develop tappers' skills are also seen supporting higher rubber production, the source said.

For 2021-22, India's rubber exports are likely to rise to 15,000 tn from 11,324 tn a year ago, the source said.  End
