India Grain: Wheat prices rise as demand grows; maize dn in key mkts

NEW DELHI - Prices of mill-quality wheat rose today in Indore and Kota as demand for the staple grain increased. On the other hand, maize prices were down in key wholesale markets across the country, traders said.

 

In Indore, Madhya Pradesh, prices of mill-quality WHEAT were up and the grain was sold at 2,360-2,375 rupees per 100 kg, said Lavish Shah, a local trader. Arrivals of the grain were pegged at 3,500 bags (1 bag = 50 kg), up 500 bags from Monday.

 

In Kota, Rajasthan, wheat was sold at 2,180-2,200 rupees per 100 kg, up 10 rupees from Monday as demand improved, Aniket Mehta, a local trader said.

 

Arrivals in Kota were pegged at 30,000 bags, up 5,000 bags from the previous day of trade, Mehta said.

 

Wheat production in 2022-23 (Jul-Jun) is estimated at a record 112.7 mln tn, 4.2% higher than the output of 107.7 mln tn in the previous crop year, according to the third advance estimate of the government.

 

The US Department of Agriculture has estimated global wheat production in 2023-24 at 789.8 mln tn, higher than the estimated 788.3 mln tn in 2022-23.

 

Prices of MAIZE fell in Davanagere, Karnataka, on sluggish demand, said Shiva Kumar, a local trader. Maize was sold in Davanagere at 1,850-2,055 rupees per 100 kg, down 50 rupees from Monday, he said.

 

Arrivals of maize were steady at 1,000 bags, Shiva Kumar said.

 

Similarly, in Purnea, Bihar, maize prices were down at 1,680-1,780 rupees per 100 kg, said Kanhaiya Rastogi, a local trader. Prices were down 20 rupees from Monday and arrivals were lower by 1,000 bags at 4,000 bags, traders said.
