NEW DELHI – Prices of wheat rose in key markets across the country today, while those of maize in were up in Purnea, Bihar, traders said.
* WHEAT prices in Indore, Madhya Pradesh, rose today because of an increase in demand from bulk buyers from south India, traders said. Arrivals were pegged at 1,500 bags (1 bag = 100 kg), as against 1,200 bags on the previous day.
* However, demand in the spot markets from retail consumers is weak as they are sourcing wheat from the Centre's free food plan, a local trader N.K. Agarwal said.
* Prices of the foodgrain also rose in Kota, Rajasthan, because of a decline in supply, traders said. Arrivals were pegged at 6,000 bags (1 bag = 100 kg), from around 7,000 bags the previous day, a local trader Praveen Agarwal said.
* Prices of MAIZE in Purnea, Bihar, were higher because of a decline in arrivals of the coarse grain, local trader Ghanshyam Yadav said. Arrivals were pegged at 30,000 bags (1 bag = 65 kg), from around 45,000 bags on the previous day.
* Weak demand from bulk buyers is discouraging farmers from offloading stocks in the market, Yadav said. Demand for the commodity has fallen as the quality of the crop has declined over the past few days, traders said.
* Also, bulk buyers such as poultry-feed manufacturers are purchasing wheat to manufacture poultry-feed, which is also weighing on demand for maize, a Davanagere-based trader Shiv Kumar said.
* Prices of BASMATI 1121 PADDY and BAJRA were largely unchanged across markets.
* Following are highlights of trade in grain markets today:
