India Stocks Review: Indices eke out gains in listless session

MUMBAI – After trading in the negative territory for most of the session, benchmark indices managed to register gains in the last half-hour due to buying in information technology companies.

However, it was a fairly dull session for equities as investors exercised caution ahead of the outcome of the Reserve Bank of India's monetary policy meeting on Friday. The three-day meeting began today.

Geopolitical tensions between the US and China also kept the sentiment jittery.

The Nifty 50 ended 0.3% higher at 17388.15 points after hitting a low of 17225.85 points during the day. Sensex closed 0.4% higher at 58350.53 points, but hit a low of 57788.78 points earlier in the day.

Although the indices ended on a positive note, they underperformed most of their emerging market peers. Benchmark indices across Taiwan, Hong Kong, South Korea, and Philippines ended 0.5-1% higher.

A recovery in technology stocks, banks, and Reliance Industries led the indices higher. Shares of RIL, ICICI Bank, Tata Consultancy Services, Infosys and Tech Mahindra ended nearly 1-2% higher.

Frontline stocks saw limited movement, but gains were prominent in the mid-cap space. Shares of SpiceJet surged nearly 13% on reports that promoter Ajay Singh was considering selling a partial stake in the airline. Shares of Devyani International rose 6% after reporting strong quarterly numbers.

Shares of Zomato ended 0.2% lower at 55.45 rupees, sharply off the day's lows due to likely buying by global and domestic institutional investors. The stock had fallen more than 6% at open after block deals totalling 626 mln shares, or about 8% stake, took place on the bourses.

News reports had said that Uber Technologies, which holds 7.8% stake in the online food delivery aggregator, is likely

to have sold its entire holding. Institutional investors such as Fidelity International, Franklin Templeton and ICICI Prudential Life Insurance Co were likely buyers of the shares sold by Uber, according to reports.

Meanwhile, disappointing earnings weighed on the shares of Siemens, Indus Towers, and Vaibhav Global, pulling them

down by over 5-6%. Profit booking after sharp gains in the past few sessions dragged down shares of Adani Green Energy, YES Bank and GMM Pfaudler by 4% each.
