India Stocks Review:End lacklustre session flat ahead of US CPI data

NEW DELHI – After moving between gains and losses throughout the session, benchmark equity indices ended largely unchanged today as investors stayed on the sidelines ahead of data on consumer inflation in the US in July, due later today.

Risk aversion on the part of investors restricted the scope for any significant moves on either side. As a result, benchmark indices moved within a narrow range throughout the day.

The key US inflation reading will set the tone for the course of action that the Federal Reserve may take. Investors are closely awaiting the data to find out signs of inflation peaking out in the world's largest economy.

Jitters among investors weighed across Asian markets today, with indices in China, Hong Kong, South Korea and Japan ending 0.7-2.0% lower. Despite ending largely flat, domestic benchmark indices fared better than their Asian peers.

The broader market bore the brunt of risk aversion among investors. All small- and mid-cap indices on the National Stock Exchange lagged their large-cap peers and ended 0.1-0.6% lower.

Today, the Nifty 50 moved between a high of 17566.10 points and a low of 17442.80 points, before ending 0.1% higher at 17534.75 points. The 30-stock Sensex hit a high of 58984.32 points and a low of 58583.36 points, and closed 0.1% lower at 58817.29 points.

Stock-specific action, guided by corporate earnings, was prominent in the market today. Shares of Hindalco Industries extended their early gains and rose over 4% after the company's Apr-Jun consolidated net profit jumped sharply on year. Positive sentiment for the company also lifted other metal companies, pulling the Nifty Metal index up 1.6%.

Bharti Airtel rose 1.6%, buoyed by better-than-expected revenue for the June quarter amid robust growth in data consumption.

Indraprastha Gas, G R Infraprojects, City Union Bank, Tata Chemicals, and Fine Organic Industries jumped 6-16% after these companies posted strong performances for Apr-Jun.

On the other hand, Trident, Indoco Remedies, Granules India, Lux Industries, Natco Pharma, SeQuent Scientific, Eclerx Services, Samvardhana Motherson International, and Vijaya Diagnostic Centre plunged 4-13%, as their Apr-Jun earnings disappointed the Street.

Shares of Delhivery slumped 6.6% and registered their biggest loss in a day since listing as the company's consolidated net loss widened year-on-year in Apr-Jun.
