MUMBAI – Chana prices are likely to rise further this week due to increase in demand from millers and stockists, in anticipation of demand for besan and chana dal during the monsoon season and for festivals, the India Pulses and Grains Association said in its weekly market update.

A sharp drop in chana arrivals in Madhya Pradesh and Rajasthan markets is also likely to support prices, the pulses body said. However, cheaper imported yellow peas and imported chana may limit the rise in prices. Uncertainty over volume and price of new yellow pea imports from Canada and Russia may also cap further rise, the association said.

Last week, desi chana prices were mixed due to uneven arrivals and limited buying by mills at lower price levels, the pulses body said. Sales were low as stockists were hesitant to purchase at higher costs. Demand for chana dal and besan was weak despite good monsoon, as cheaper yellow peas and imported chana were available, according to the association.

In the week ended Saturday, prices of chana in Indore, Madhya Pradesh, rose by INR 100 from the previous week to INR 6,000-INR 6,050 per 100 kilograms, the association said. Prices of chana in Akola, Maharashtra, were steady at INR 6,025-INR 6,050 per 100 kg. End
