NEW DELHI - External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar on Tuesday met Chinese President Xi Jinping in Beijing, and apprised him about the recent developments in India-China bilateral relations. Jaishankar is in China currently to attend the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation foreign ministers meeting.
"Called on President Xi Jinping this morning in Beijing along with my fellow SCO Foreign Ministers. Conveyed the greetings of President Droupadi Murmu & Prime Minister Narendra Modi. Apprised President Xi of the recent development of our bilateral ties. Value the guidance of our leaders in that regard," Jaishankar posted on social media platform X.
This is Jaishankar's first visit to China after tensions between the two countries escalated due to the Galwan Valley clash along the Line of Actual Control in 2020. Before meeting Xi Jinping, Jaishankar also held talks with Chinese Vice President Han Zheng and Foreign Minister Wang Yi.
During the meeting with Zheng, Jaishankar asserted that India-China ties have been steadily improving since the meeting between Modi and Jinping in Kazan last October. He expressed confidence that the ongoing discussions would maintain positive trajectory.
"As neighboring nations and major economies, an open exchange of views and perspectives between India and China is very important," Jaishankar said.
In his meeting with Wang Yi, Jaishankar emphasised the positive effects of peace on the border on smooth development of bilateral relations. Both ministers agreed to take more practical steps, such as travelling to each other's countries and establishing direct flight connectivity, to facilitate people-to-people exchanges.
Jaishankar also underlined the need for cooperation on trans-border rivers, including resumption of provision of hydrological data by the Chinese side. He also took up restrictive trade measures and roadblocks to economic cooperation. End
