MUMBAI – The India Meteorological Department has forecast extremely heavy rainfall over parts of central and west India till Sunday due to a depression over Chhattisgarh. It has also issued a red alert in these parts of the country. A few areas in central, west, and east India are likely to see very heavy rainfall till Tuesday.

Friday's depression over coastal West Bengal has moved west-northwest and is currently over Chhattisgarh and adjoining Jharkhand. This weather system is likely to move across east Madhya Pradesh and weaken into a well-marked low pressure area by Sunday. There is also an off-trough running along Gujarat-north Kerala costs and two cyclonic circulations lie over southwest Madhya Pradesh and south Gujarat.

Under the influence of the above weather systems, red alert has been issued for extremely heavy rainfall in Madhya Pradesh, Vidarbha, central Maharashtra, Konkan, Goa, and Gujarat region for Saturday. The weather bureau has also issued a red alert in west Madhya Pradesh, Gujarat region, and east Rajasthan for Sunday. A red alert indicates rainfall exceeding 204.5 millimetres in 24 hours and is the highest level of weather warning.

The weather department said very heavy rainfall is likely over east and central India till Tuesday and west India till Monday and has issued an orange alert in parts of these regions. An orange alert is issued when rainfall is likely to exceed 115.6 millimetres and go up to 204.4 millimetres within 24 hours.

The weather department has issued a warning of moderate to high risk of flash floods in a few watersheds and neighbourhoods of Chhattisgarh, Madhya Pradesh, and Vidarbha during the next 24 hours. Surface runoff or inundation may occur at some fully saturated soils and low-lying areas, it added. It has also issued a warning of low to moderate risk of flash floods in Gujarat Region, central Maharashtra, Marathwada, Konkan, and Goa for next 24 hours.

Apart from the above mentioned weather systems, there is an upper air cyclonic circulation over Punjab and adjoining Haryana and a western disturbance as a cyclonic circulation over Jammu and Kashmir. These are likely to lead to extremely heavy rainfall over parts of east Rajasthan on Sunday and Monday. Isolated very heavy rainfall is likely over northwest India till Wednesday. End
