--Poll panel: Vice-president elections to be conducted on Sept 9

NEW DELHI – The election for the post of vice-president of India, if necessary, will be held on Sept. 9 and counting will also be taken up the same day, the Election Commission of India said Friday in a statement. The election is being held following former vice-president of India and ex-officio chairman of the Rajya Sabha Jagdeep Dhankhar's resignation on Monday from the post for health reasons.

The last date for filing nominations for the election is Aug. 21 and the last date of withdrawal of nominations is Aug. 25, it said. The polling will be held between 1000 IST and 1700 IST in New Delhi, according to the statement.

The electoral college comprises 788 members of both the houses of Parliament, although five seats are currently vacant. The value of vote of each Member of Parliament would be the same, the poll panel clarified.

As per established rules, the election to fill up the vacancy caused by expiration of term of the outgoing vice-president needs to be completed before the end of the term of the sitting incumbent, however this is a special case. End

IST, or Indian Standard Time, is five-and-a-half hours ahead of GMT
