NEW DELHI – The government has allocated 500,000 tonnes each of wheat and rice for sale under its Bharat brand products, a senior government official told Informist. The sales had been discontinued in June after the last allocated quantity was exhausted.
Bharat Atta will likely be sold at INR 32-INR 33 per kg, slightly up from INR 30 per kg earlier as the wheat has been purchased at the revised minimum support price of INR 2,425 per 100 kg, the official said. Bharat Rice will continue to be sold at INR 34 per kg, as it is from last year's produce, the official said.
Contrary to earlier news reports, Bharat Atta will not contain soymeal, the official said.
Sales of Bharat Atta first began on Nov. 6, 2023, followed by Bharat Rice on Feb. 6, 2024. So far, the government has allocated and sold about 1.9 million tonnes of wheat and about 1.8 million tonnes of rice under its Bharat brands.
The allocated quantity may be revised or another tranche of sales launched if the government sees the need for it. "Right now, inflation is low and thus the allocated amounts are much smaller than what they were last year. The government wants to see the trend in retail demand. If there is a need, more will be allocated," the official said.
The total quantity will be distributed to government agencies such as Kendriya Bhandar, National Agricultural Cooperative Marketing Federation of India, and National Consumers' Cooperatives Federation, for sales.
India's retail inflation rates for rice and wheat have declined significantly from their double-digit highs in 2023. As of July, rice inflation stood at 1.54% and wheat inflation was 4.43%. This decline is attributed to improved harvests, favorable monsoon, and increased government stockpiles. While wheat stocks with Food Corp. of India as of Aug. 1 were at a four-year high of 34.7 million tonnes, rice stocks were at a two-decade high of 38.0 million tonnes. End
