NEW DELHI – Effective Saturday, yellow pea imports into the country will attract a minimum import price, following the expiration of the previous notification that permitted duty-free imports until February 28, 2025.

The absence of any new notification extending the deadline has triggered the minimum import price to come back. Consequently, all incoming shipments of yellow peas will now attract a minimum import price of INR 200 per kilogram, with the exception of those consignments for which the bill of lading was issued on or before Feb. 28.

The government will stop duty-free import of yellow peas, Minister of Consumer Affairs, Food and Public Distribution, Pralhad Joshi had told Informist on Feb. 13 on the sidelines of The Pulses Conclave 2025.

The government had removed the 50% import duty on yellow peas in December 2023 with a deadline of Feb. 28 this year, to control rising prices of both tur and chana. Yellow peas are used as a substitute for both pulses. The government also removed the 66% import duty on chana in May 2024.

As a result, imports of yellow peas zoomed to 2.73 million tonnes in the first nine months of 2024 from virtually nothing the preceding year. Yellow peas are the cheapest variety of pulses available in the country and, currently, their prices range between INR 3,675 and INR 3,950 per 100 kg.

Traders and stakeholders had long been asking for restrictions to be imposed on imports of yellow pea. "This step by government will go a long way in making India self-sufficient in pulses," Agricultural economist Deepak Pareek said. End
