MUMBAI – Global coffee prices plunged around 12% on month to 259.31 cents a pound in July, as per the International Coffee Organization's composite indicator. During the month, the composite indicator fluctuated between 252.46 cents a pound and 269.57 cents a pound, with a median value of 258.78 cents a pound, the organisation said in a report.

Improved harvest from Brazil and uncertainties around US tariffs put downward pressure on the global coffee prices during the month. While the organisation expects a small surplus in the coffee year 2024-25 (Oct-Sept), it may not be enough to build stocks in key destination markets, the report said.

The price of Colombian Milds coffee fell 10.5% on month to 322.37 cents a pound in July and that of Other Milds declined 10.4% on month to 325.50 cents a pound. Brazilian Naturals fell over 12% on month to 297.04 cents a pound while Robustas retracted the most, by almost 15% to 167.19 cents a pound. The London Intercontinental Commodity Exchange was the main driver of the decline, decreasing by more than 16% whereas the New York ICE market shrank by over 12% to a nine-month low of 289.17 cents a pound in July.

The arbitrage between the London and New York futures shrank further by 7.2% to 135.74 cents a pound in July, according to the report.

Global green beans exports in June rose over 3% on year to 9.91 million bags (1 bag = 60 kg). This is the second consecutive month of positive growth in the current coffee year. However, total green bean exports during Oct-Jun fell 3.0% at 91.68 million bags from 94.52 million bags. "The latest upturn was mainly driven by the Robustas, with strong support from the Other Milds," the report said. Data for exports comes with a month's lag.

Exports of Colombian Milds increased by 9% on year in June to 1.1 million bags, following two consecutive months of poor export performance. Shipments of the Other Milds rose nearly 15% on year in June to 2.71 million bags, marking the fifth consecutive month of positive growth.

Green bean exports of Brazilian Naturals fell by 21.3% on year in June to 2.51 million bags. This is the first time since July 2023 that exports of the Brazilian Naturals have fallen below the 3-million-bag mark. Brazil was the main driver of the downturn, with its exports decreasing by 29% on year to 1.81 million bags, as per the report. Green bean exports of Robustas rose nearly 17% on year to 3.92 million bags in June, mainly driven by growth in Vietnam. Total exports of soluble coffee rose 47% on year to 1.35 million bags in June.

Coffee exports from South America fell 18% on year to 4.16 million bags in June. Exports from Africa rose 28% on year to 2.19 million bags. Exports from Mexico and Central America rose 18% on year to 2 million bags in June and from Asia and Oceania increased 38.6% to 3.34 million bags, the organisation said. End
