NEW DELHI – India's unemployment rate for persons aged 15 years and above fell to 5.2% in July from 5.6% in June, according to the data released by the Ministry of Statistics and Programme Implementation released Monday. For the quarter ended June, the joblessness rate was 5.4%, as per the statistics ministry's monthly Periodic Labour Force Survey.

The statistics ministry now releases unemployment and labour force data on a monthly basis for both rural and urban areas, and also on a quarterly basis. Previously, the ministry only released quarterly urban unemployment data, and annual data for both urban and rural areas. This is the first time the ministry has released quarterly labour force data for urban and rural India, along with the monthly data for July.

The joblessness rate in urban areas for persons aged 15 and above rose to 7.2% in July from 7.1% in the previous month. At 7.2%, the urban unemployment rate was the highest in the four months for which data is available under the revamped labour force participation survey.

For rural areas, the unemployment rate fell to 4.4% last month from 4.9% in June. The joblessness rate for July is the lowest in the four months for which data is available.

The labour force participation rate--the percentage of persons working or seeking or available for work--rose to 54.9% in July for age group of 15 years and above from 54.2% in June. The worker population ratio, which is the percentage of employed persons in the population, rose 52.0% in July from 51.2% in June.

Youth unemployment rate, for the age group of 15-29 years, remained sharply higher than the national average in July at 14.9%, even as it was lower than June's rate of 15.3%. Youth joblessness rate was higher for females at 16.7% as against 14.3% for males.

In the June quarter, the overall rural unemployment rate was lower at 4.8% compared to urban areas, where it was 6.8%. Unemployment rate for the youth was 14.6% in Apr-Jun. Joblessness rate for young women was 16.0% in the June quarter while it was 14.1% for young men.

The labour force participation rate was 55.0% in the June quarter and the worker population ratio was 52.0%. End
