AHMEDABAD – Hindustan Petroleum Corp Ltd's liquefied natural gas terminal at Chhara in Gujarat has received its first cargo, 11 years after it got permission to build a 5 mln tn per annum LNG terminal here, sources said. This marks the beginning of the process to commission the project.

"The first LNG tanker Maran Gas Mystras, sailing under Greek flag, is standing alongside Chhara terminal as of now," a senior official with the state energy department told Informist. "Over coming days, this LNG would be used to commission Chhara terminal." The ship had set sail on Mar 26 from Punta Europa port of Equatorial Guinea in Central Africa, and it would be berthed today itself, said another official working with state maritime regulator Gujarat Maritime Board.

Informist had on Apr 5 reported that first LNG tanker would call on at Chhara terminal on Apr 12.

Hindustan Petroleum Corp Ltd's wholly-owned subsidiary HPCL LNG Ltd has developed a greenfield, 5 mtpa liquefied natural gas terminal, storage and regasification facility at Chhara, Gujarat. The LNG terminal was awarded to HPCL and its partner Shapoorji Pallonji group in 2013 and HPCL has since been trying to build and commission the project.

With the commissioning of this terminal, it would be the fourth one in the state of Gujarat. The state already has Petronet LNG Ltd's 17.5 mtpa terminal at Dahej, global energy major Shell-owned 6.8 mtpa LNG terminal at Hazira, and Gujarat State Petroleum Corp-owned 5 mtpa capacity LNG terminal at Mundra. Another LNG facility, a 5 mtpa terminal by Swan LNG Ltd, is under construction at Jaffrabad.

Shares of HPCL today closed 1.9% lower at 478.25 rupees on the National Stock Exchange. End
