NEW DELHI – The GST Council has approved a uniform tax levy of 12% on all types of milk cans, solar cookers, carton boxes, and paper boards, Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman said today. The Union minister held the 53rd GST Council meeting with ministers of states today in New Delhi.
So far, there were different goods and services tax rates applicable on milk cans made of steel, aluminium, and iron, Revenue Secretary Sanjay Malhotra said. "Some attracted 18%, some attracted 12%, so we decided to make it uniform."
Similarly, single energy source solar cookers were taxed at different rates from those with dual energy source. "From now on, all solar cookers whether single or dual energy source, will attract 12% GST," the finance ministry said in a release.
Earlier, the government levied a GST of 18% on carton boxes and paper boards. This has now been cut to 12%. The council also decided to levy a uniform GST rate of 12% on water sprinklers and fire sprinklers.
Apart from its decision of 12% uniform rate on the above mentioned items, the council also decided to levy a uniform rate of 5% integrated GST on the import of parts, components, testing equipment, tools and tool-kits of aircraft, the release said. End
