MUMBAI – The India Meteorological Department has issued a red alert for extremely heavy rainfall over parts of Madhya Pradesh Saturday under the influence of a cyclonic circulation that lies over northeast Madhya Pradesh in lower tropospheric levels. A red alert indicates rainfall exceeding 204.5 millimetres in 24 hours and is the highest level of weather warning.
On account of extremely heavy rain, the weather agency has advised farmers to postpone the sowing of soybean and wait until the cessation of rainfall before resowing soybean and pearl millet that have been damaged in the grid zone in east Madhya Pradesh. It has also advised to postpone the sowing of maize, soybean and transplanting of rice. The weather agency has also asked to drain out excess water from already sown maize, soybean, rice nurseries and transplanted rice in eastern part of the state.
Extremely heavy rainfall is also seen in parts of Himachal Pradesh on Sunday and in ghat areas of central Maharashtra on Sunday and Monday, the weather agency said. The department expects heavy to very heavy rainfall to continue over northwest, central, northeast and east India during the next six-seven days. In Himachal Pradesh, IMD has advised farmers to make proper drainage channels in the fields of vegetables and maize and postpone the sowing of kidney beans in high hills sub-temperate wet zone.
In east and central India, heavy rainfall is also likely over Jharkhand, Gangetic West Bengal, Odisha, Vidarbha, Chhattisgarh till Tuesday and in sub-Himalayan West Bengal and Sikkim on Saturday and from Tuesday to Thursday. The bureau also sees very heavy rainfall over Chhattisgarh till Monday, and over Vidarbha on Monday and Tuesday.
Meanwhile, an upper air cyclonic circulation lies over northern parts of Gangetic West Bengal and neighbourhood areas and extends upto middle tropospheric levels tilting southwest wards. Under its influence, a low-pressure area is likely to form over Gangetic West Bengal and neighbourhood during the next 24 hours.
Moderate rainfall in most places accompanied by thunderstorm, lightning and isolated heavy rainfall is likely to continue over northeast India during the next seven days with very heavy rainfall over Meghalaya Saturday, the department said. In southern part of the country, heavy rainfall is likely over Tamil Nadu on Saturday, Kerala and Mahe over the weekend and during Wednesday to Friday, interior Karnataka till Sunday and coastal Karnataka over the weekend and on Thursday and Friday, IMD said.
