NEW DELHI - Growth in wholesale sales of two-wheelers in July reversed the slump seen in recent months, mainly driven by a double-digit growth in scooter sales, data from the Society of Indian Automobile Manufacturers showed Thursday. Domestic sales of passenger vehicles, although better than the past two months, were up a paltry 1.5% on year in July.
Companies despatched 1.94 million vehicles in July, marking a year-on-year increase of nearly 8%. Exports saw a robust 31% jump to 541,282 units, driven by strong growth in two-wheeler and three-wheeler shipments, despite weaker performance in the passenger vehicle segment. Companies stepped up the production of automobiles, as output grew nearly 11% on year to 2.70 million units.
Two-wheelers, which form a significant chunk of automobiles sold in India, saw their despatches grow nearly 9% on year in July to 1.57 million units. Exports of two-wheelers jumped nearly 34% on year to 433,873 units. Production of two-wheelers grew just over 12% to 2.19 million units in July.
Scooter sales took the driver's seat in July as two-wheelers showed renewed signs of demand acceleration. Companies sold 643,169 scooters to dealerships in India, up over 16% on year while they despatched 59,086 scooters overseas, up over 18% on year. Wholesale sales of motorcycles in India grew nearly 5% on year to 890,107 units but exports grew faster at 35% to 369,747 units. The majority of two-wheeler exports by Indian companies are motorcycles.
PASSENGER VEHICLES
According to SIAM, demand sentiment for passenger vehicles remained subdued in July, as reflected in the modest on-year growth in the segment. Passenger car sales in India fell slightly to 96,147 units in July, even as exports rose 9% on year to 36,184 units. Wholesale sales of utility vehicles in India grew by only around 2% on year to 192,763 units in July. Their exports grew over 8% to 30,356 units.
Output of passenger vehicles barely changed from the year ago in July, as companies produced 398,071 cars. While production of utility vehicles rose over 2%, companies cut down on production of passenger cars in the face of dwindling demand by nearly 4% last month.
THREE-WHEELERS
Wholesale sales of three-wheelers in July painted an encouraging picture despite forming a very small chunk of the overall automobile sales in India. Companies sold 69,403 three-wheelers to dealers in India last month, up nearly 18%. This was the strongest on-year growth registered among all automobile segments in July.
Most three-wheelers sold in India are passenger carriers. Their despatches grew over 21% to 58,693 units. Their exports grew a faster 46% to 39,140 units. In response to robust demand for this sub-segment, companies increased production by 27% in July compared to the same month last year, manufacturing 100,522 units. Overall production of three-wheelers grew 24% on year to 112,241 units.
"With the advent of the festive season beginning with Onam festivities in the latter part of August, the Indian auto industry remains cautiously optimistic for the demand momentum to pick up in the coming months," SIAM's Director General Rajesh Menon said in a press release.
Sales of passenger vehicles, including those by Tata Motors Ltd., were 340,772 units in July, down 0.2% on year. Excluding Tata Motors, passenger vehicle sales were 301,251 units, up nearly 1.5% on year.
