NEW DELHI – West Bengal's rice production is seen marginally higher at 16.1 mln tn in 2019-20 (Jul-Jun), compared to 15.95 mln tn in the previous year, a senior official with the state's agriculture department said.
The state has pegged wheat output at 930,000 tn, 18% higher from the previous year. Wheat production is seen rising sharply this year, due to conducive weather during the cultivation period.
Maize output in 2019-20 is seen up nearly 7% at 706,000 tn.
Production of pulses is expected to surge over 21% to 311,000 tn. The production of pulses is seen higher this year due to excessive post-monsoon rainfall during the rabi season, the official said.
Total production of food grains has been pegged at 19.02 mln tn, 2% higher than last year, the official said.
In the case of oilseeds, the state sees the overall output in 2019-20 at 924,000 tn, up 4% from last year.
Potato output in West Bengal, a key producer, is seen at 12.9 mln tn, a whopping 32% higher from the previous year.
Jute production is seen at 7.70 mln bales, marginally higher than 7.67 mln bales pegged for last year. The state is the largest producer of jute.
