NEW DELHI – Prices of mill-quality wheat rose slightly in Kota, Rajasthan, while those of maize in Davanagere, Karnataka, were flat today.
Prices rose slightly due to a drop in arrivals, said Aniket Mehta, a Kota-based trader. Arrivals were lower due to rainfall in the last few days, said the trader.
In Kota, wheat was sold at 2,150-2,200 rupees per 100 kg, up 5-10 from the previous trading day. Arrivals were at 5,000 bags (1 bag = 50 kg) today lower from 10,000 bags the previous day.
In Davanagere, maize was sold at 2,100-2,350 rupees per 100 kg, steady from the previous trading day, said Shiva Kumar, a local trader. Arrivals were also steady at 500 bags, he said.
The government on Thursday prohibited the export of non-basmati white rice with immediate effect, the Directorate General of Foreign Trade said in a notification. The decision to curb exports comes amid lower paddy acreage and concerns over El Nino. Acreage of rice, the key grain in the kharif season, was down 6.1% on year at 12.3 mln ha as of Jul 14. The total area sown under paddy so far is 30.8% of the normal area for the season.
