MUMBAI – Benchmark indices ended today’s session flat following a late surge in banking and financial services stocks. The surge came on a day when information technology stocks fell the most.

The Nifty 50 and Sensex, which were down for most of today's session, closed flat at 18599 and 62792.88 points, respectively.

Among Nifty 50 stocks, UltraTech Cement ended 2.9% higher after surging earlier to 8,120 rupees, the highest in nearly 19 months. Divi's Laboratories was the second-largest gainer, ending up 2.2% after two straight sessions in the red.

Shares of Titan Co today hit a fresh all-time high of 2,893 rupees, before ending 0.9% higher at 2,881.45 rupees.

Stocks not part of the Nifty 50 also witnessed impressive gains. Sharda Cropchem's shares rose as much as 12.6% and hit the highest level in over 10 months at 565.00 rupees before ending the session 10.8% higher.

The Nifty Realty index was the top gainer among sectoral indices, followed by the Nifty Auto, which ended 1.1% higher. The Nifty Auto, earlier in the session, had peaked to its all-time high of 14743.45 points.

However, the late recovery in the indices was due stocks in the banking and pharma sectors. Key banking and financial services stocks such as Axis Bank, Kotak Mahindra Bank, Bajaj Finserv and Bajaj Finance ended 1-1.8% higher.

The Nifty Pharma index ended up 0.6% after hitting 13028.40 points, the highest in over five months. The Nifty Infrastructure index also hit a lifetime high of 5527.55 points in early trade on the back of strong prospects of growth in the Indian economy.

Among other sectoral indices, the Nifty IT index was the top loser ending down 1.9%. IT stocks were hit primarily by the macroeconomic uncertainty in the US. Further, US technology giant EPAM Systems toned down its revenue guidance for Apr-Jun and 2023.

Of the top five losers among Nifty 50 stocks, four belonged to the IT sector. Tech Mahindra was the top loser among Nifty 50 stocks ending 2.1% lower. It was followed by the shares of Infosys and Tata Consultancy Services which ended down 2% and 1.7%, respectively. Shares of Wipro fell 1.1%.

However, benchmark indices are unlikely to fall any more this week and could witness a range break out on Wednesday, similar to the one seen on Monday, said Brijesh Ail of IDBI Capital.
