MUMBAI - Domestic equities ended higher today and the benchmark Nifty 50 closed above 17900 points on the back of gains in information technology companies, some banks and metal producers.
The 50-stock index, however, struggled to take the momentum further and inch towards the psychologically-crucial 18000-point mark as investors were apprehensive of the prevailing global uncertainties and therefore, reluctant to take aggressive risky bets.
The Nifty 50 had last tested 18000 points in early April.
The Nifty 50 and Sensex touched a high of 17980.55 points and 60284.55 points, respectively, intraday driven by technology stocks that rose tracking global peers.
But bouts of profit booking pulled them off highs. The Nifty 50 ended 0.6% higher at 17936.35 points and Sensex closed 0.5% up at 60115.13 points.
Investors took calculative bets as they awaited India's retail inflation data, due later today, and US inflation data that will be released on Tuesday.
While India's retail inflation is likely to have inched higher last month, in the US, prices have likely cooled off month-on-month.
Though headline indices struggled to gain, the momentum in the broader market was stronger. The
small-cap indices on the NSE hit an over four-month high today.
Prominent gainers in the mid- and small-cap segments included those in real estate, defence, media, fertilisers, and new-age technology companies.
Shares of Hindustan Aeronautics rose for the 12th straight session today, marking their longest-ever gaining streak, and touched a lifetime high of 2,638.35 rupees due to strong outlook for earnings growth.
The stock has been reportedly added to the Asia Pacific ex-Japan focus list by Morgan Stanley.
Expectation of strong housing demand propelled shares of real estate companies higher. Some cement stocks
succumbed to profit booking after the recent gains, and Shree Cement was among them.
