NEW DELHI – The labour ministry will resume five surveys on employment situation from the first week of July, as COVID-19 cases have fallen sharply, a senior government official said.

The all-India annual surveys on migrant workers, domestic workers, transport sector, and professionals, and the quarterly survey on establishments employing less than nine workers were put on hold in mid-April following the sharp surge in coronavirus infections.

Since the tabulation of the surveys continued during the pandemic, results could be out in six-seven months, the official told Informist.

The labour ministry had initially planned to release the results of the survey in October.

"If the ministry finds any abnormalities in data, it will seek the expert group's feedback and make required adjustments," the official said.

The labour ministry has appointed an expert committee under Calcutta University Emeritus Professor S.P. Mukherjee to advise it on the surveys.

The survey on migrant workers will study their employment condition, the impact of the pandemic on them, and the kind of work undertaken by them, while the survey on domestic workers will estimate the number of domestic workers in the country.

The survey on employment generated in the transport sector and by professionals will estimate jobs created by companies like Ola, Uber, and in professional fields such as law, medical, and accountancy.

The survey on jobs created by cab aggregators and service-providing apps was originally started by the NITI Aayog, after the policy think tank felt that employment data in the country was not capturing creation of jobs by new-age sectors.

The labour ministry took over the survey after NITI Aayog was unsure about the accuracy of the collected data.

Currently, there are no comprehensive surveys to estimate informal jobs created in the country.  End
