RBI says got back 97.3% of 2,000-rupee banknotes as of Thu

MUMBAI – The Reserve Bank of India today said it has got back 97.3% of the 2,000-rupee banknotes in circulation since it announced the withdrawal of the notes on May 19. The central bank said the 2,000-rupee banknotes continue to hold a legal tender and 97.6 bln rupees worth banknotes of the denomination remained in the system as of Thursday.

 
The total value of 2,000-rupee banknotes in circulation was 3.56 trln rupees as of May 19. Since Oct 8, branches of banks have stopped accepting and exchanging the 2,000-rupee notes. Only 19 RBI issue offices continue to allow the exchange of the banknoteswith a limit of 20,000 rupees at a time.  End
