MUMBAI – Prices of most foodgrains were largely steady on Monday in key markets across the country amid a lack of fresh cues, traders said. Maize prices may gain in the near term due to tight farmer stocks and firm demand. Heavy showers had little impact in Rajasthan as the wheat market was operational and prices remained unchanged from Friday, they added.

MAIZE prices in Karnataka's Davanagere were steady at INR 2,350-INR 2,450 per 100 kilograms. Arrivals were also unchanged at 500 bags (1 bag = 60 kg), local trader Shiva Kumar said.

Going ahead, maize rates are likely to gain in the near term as arrivals of 2024's kharif crop will taper down in the coming weeks and arrivals from the current year's kharif crop will only begin in October, traders said. "Prices are likely to rise by INR 100-INR 150 per 100 kg in September first week. Arrivals are likely to fall further as the stock with farmers has almost ended," Kumar said.

WHEAT prices were largely steady across key markets on Monday, traders said. In Indore, wheat rates remained unchanged at INR 2,860 per 100 kilograms, Gaurav Kochar, local trader, said. Prices in Navi Mumbai's Vashi market were steady at INR 2,800-INR 2,825 per 100 kg, local trader Devendra Vora said.

In Kota, Rajasthan, too, wheat prices held steady at INR 2,600 per 100 kg, local trader Aniket Mehta said. Arrivals of the grain were 8,000 bags, significantly up from 1,000 bags (1 bag = 50 kg) on Friday. Typically, arrivals improve on Monday as farmers bring more stocks after the weekend.

"Though there are heavy rains, the market is open and functioning. No disruption so far," Mehta said. The India Meteorological Department has forecast heavy to very heavy rainfall to continue over Rajasthan till Friday.

Prices of 1401 and 1121 basmati RICE in Vashi were also steady at INR 7,300-INR 7,400 per 100 kg and INR 7,800-INR 8,000 per 100 kg, respectively, Vora said. Prices of 5% broken rice in Vashi were steady at INR 3,150 per 100 kg, he added.

Prices of the premium non-basmati rice variety sona masoori were also steady from the previous day at INR 4,600 per 100 kg at Bhavanipuram in Vijayawada, Andhra Pradesh, local trader Ravi Shankar said. Prices are expected to be steady till November, he added. End
