MUMBAI – Prices of chana rose while those of tur and masur remained steady in key major spot markets across the country, traders said. The increase in prices of chana was driven by growing expectation that the government may impose an import duty on yellow peas as early as this week, as reported by Informist Tuesday. Tur prices held steady due to lack of market cues while masur prices remained stable amid regular supply of the legume by the government, they said.

CHANA prices in Indore, Madhya Pradesh, rose by INR 50 from Wednesday to INR 6,025-INR 6,050 per 100 kilograms, said Dinesh Mangal, a local trader. "Prices are up due to chatter which started a day ago about the government imposing duty on yellow pea imports," he said. The government is likely to impose import duty on yellow peas as early as this week, Satish Upadhyay, secretary, India Pulses and Grains Association, told Informist Tuesday. A duty of 30–50% on yellow pea imports would be ideal as it will support domestic farmers, Upadhyay said. Yellow peas have been exempted from import duty since December 2023.

The positive market sentiment was needed to correct prices, which had declined "too low" this week, Mangal said. Prices had fallen by INR 50-INR 100 per 100 kg in the past few days due to the availability of cheaper imports of yellow peas and chana. Shipment of yellow peas from Canada and Russia will begin arriving in the country from October while shipment of chana from Australia will begin in November.

Prices of chana in Delhi rose by INR 25 from the previous day to INR 6,100-INR 6,125 per 100 kg, traders said.

TUR prices in Solapur, Maharashtra, were steady at INR 6,550-INR 6,650 per 100 kg, said Rahul Srinivas, a local trader. About 12–13 trucks with 20,000–25,000 kg tur each arrived in the market, he said. "Prices of imports are flat, so prices of domestic tur are also steady," he said.

The demand for domestic tur is too low to take cues from, so the market is tracking the price movement of imports for direction, Srinivas said. The country has begun receiving imports of tur from African countries, which are much cheaper than domestic tur, he said. In the short term, steady imports of African tur are likely to weigh on prices of domestic tur, he said.

Prices of tur in Katni, Madhya Pradesh, were steady at INR 6,800-INR 6,900 per 100 kg, according to the India Pulses and Grains Association.

MASUR prices in Indore held steady at INR 6,050-INR 6,100 per 100 kg, Mangal said. Though arrivals of the legume have fallen, the government is offloading masur in small quantities in Madhya Pradesh, which is keeping prices from rising, he said. Prices are likely to remain steady as the government has sufficient stocks of the legume, he said. Madhya Pradesh is the top masur-producing state in the country.

Prices of choti variety of masur at Lalitpur, Uttar Pradesh, remained steady at INR 5,800-INR 6,300 per 100 kg, the association said. Prices of the moti variety of masur in Lalitpur were also steady at INR 7,200-INR 8,000 per 100 kg. End
