MUMBAI – The Cotton Association of India in its first estimates for 2025-26 (Oct-Sept) season has estimated the country's cotton output at 30.5 million bales, down 2.4% from a year ago. India's cotton production in the 2024-25 season was pegged at 31.2 million bales, where one bale equals 170 kg. Based on input received from the members of 11 cotton growing state associations and other trade sources, the Association has placed its cotton pressing estimate.
As on Oct. 31, India produced 2.46 million bales cotton. Production of cotton in the central zone, which includes Gujarat, Maharashtra, and Madhya Pradesh, is projected at 17.9 million bales, and in the north zone, comprising Punjab, Haryana, and Rajasthan, it is estimated at 3.05 million bales, the data showed.
Production in the south zone, comprising Telangana, Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka, and Tamil Nadu, is estimated at 8.95 million bales, according to the Association. Odisha and other states are likely to contribute 400,000 bales and 200,000 bales, respectively, to the country's total cotton production.
The Association has pegged India's cotton consumption in 2025-26 at 30 million bales, down from 31.4 million bales last season. Imports of cotton during the current season is pegged at 4.5 million bales, higher than 4.1 million bales in 2024-25, it said. The government has extended the suspension of 11% import duty on all varieties of cotton to Dec. 31 from Sept. 30. The move is aimed at protecting India's textile industry against the recently imposed 50% US tariffs. The short-term waiver is meant to stabilise domestic prices of cotton, relieve cost pressures on mills, and strengthen the competitiveness of textile exporters amidst fierce rivalry from Bangladesh, Vietnam, and China.
The association expects cotton export from India in 2025-26 to be 1.7 million bales, down from 1.8 million bales during last year. Cotton closing stock as of Sept. 30, 2026, is seen at 9.36 million tonnes.
