MUMBAI – Chana prices are likely to remain firm in the near term amid the ongoing festival season, the India Pulses and Grains Association said in its weekly report on Monday. Lower availability of stocks with private players and concerns about chana sowing in the upcoming rabi season due to deficient rainfall is also likely to keep prices high, the association said.
Demand from besan millers, snack-makers, wholesalers, and retailers is expected to improve in the short term, the association said. The consumption of chana dal, or processed chana, and besan, or chana flour, is expected to remain strong till at least November, or till Diwali.
Imports of chana remain limited, while estimates show a decline in production in Australia, which is expected to keep shipments of the legume low, the association said. Australia is the largest exporter of chana to India. Low arrivals and tight selling are also likely to support prices, it said. The government continues to offload chana in limited quantities and at the same price range as spot market rates, which is also supporting prices.
Rainfall across India has been deficient so far in the monsoon, and the season is likely to end with a shortfall. This has raised concerns about chana sowing in the upcoming rabi season, which is also expected to keep prices high.
The market will continue to monitor the government's sales of its chana stocks, the crop harvest in Australia, and the government's policy decisions for more cues on prices, the association said.
Prices of chana rose in the week ended Saturday due to a rise in demand for the ongoing festivals, while supply remained low, the association said. Prices of chana in Indore, Madhya Pradesh, rose by INR 50 per 100 kilograms from the previous week to INR 6,800-INR 6,900 per 100 kg. End
