MUMBAI – India's vegetable oil imports, comprising edible and non-edible oils, declined 6.7% on year to 1.58 million tonnes in September. Despite the decline, cumulative vegetable oil imports in Nov-Sept rose 2.9% to 15.46 million tonnes from 15.03 million tonnes a year ago, The Solvent Extractors' Association of India said in a release Thursday.
Nepal exported 682,452 tonnes of refined edible oils to India during Nov–Sept, mainly soybean oil, which accounted for 605,896 tonnes. Nepal imports crude soybean oil and smaller quantities of crude sunflower oil and crude palm oil, refines them, and exports the refined products to India, benefiting from zero import duty under the South Asian Free Trade Area agreement, SEA said.
India's total edible oil stocks at various ports stood at 1.24 million tonnes while pipeline stocks at factories, depots, distributors, and retail outlets were estimated at 836,000 tonnes. The total stocks thus rose by 29,000 tonnes on month to 2.07 million tonnes as of Oct. 1.
During Nov–Sept, refined oil imports declined sharply to 740,441 tonnes from 1.69 million tonnes in the corresponding period of the previous year, with their share in total edible oil imports falling to 5% from 12?rlier. The decline was primarily due to negligible imports of refined palmolein from Indonesia and Malaysia.
Prices of most edible oils registered a year-on-year rise in September. Prices of crude palm oil rose over 10% on year in September, those of soyoil rose 11%, and sunflower oil nearly 11% on year, SEA said. Meanwhile, the exchange rate also changed from INR 88.32 to INR 95.51 per US dollar, representing a depreciation of the rupee by about 8.1%.
The following table details edible oil imports in September and Nov-Sept, in tonnes, compared with year-ago levels, with the change in percentage, according to data from the SEA:
