NEW DELHI – Indian exporters anticipate restrictions on 100% broken white rice amid rising prices of the rice variety in the domestic market and increasing demand from the ethanol and poultry-feeding industries, S&P Global Energy said in a report Friday citing sources. The restrictions could further tighten broken rice export availability in India and disrupt trade flows. India previously put prohibitions on broken rice exports in September 2022 due to similar concerns. The restrictions remained in place until March 2025.

The Indian Rice Exporters' Federation has warned that restrictions on 100% broken rice exports cannot be ruled out if domestic prices continue to rise, as international prices reportedly exceed $360 per tonne amid growing demand, S&P Global said. The free-on-board price of 100% broken white rice Thursday in Kakinada was at $336 per tonne, up over 5.3% on year and 5% on month, as per Platts, part of S&P Global Energy. Exporters told S&P Global the government wants to sell rice in the domestic market rather than international markets. They still expect adequate rice availability for the ethanol industry.

India's production for 2026-27 (Oct-Sept) is estimated at 146 million tonnes, down 8 million tonnes on year due to the impact of El Nino on crops. Kharif crop production is already at risk of shortage due to the recent drought in south India, Cyclone Arnab, and unseasonal rains in Chhattisgarh, as per the report.  End
