MUMBAI – Airtel Payments Bank Ltd. has no plan to launch an initial public offering or file a draft red herring prospectus in the near future, Anubrata Biswas, managing director and chief executive officer of the payments bank, said on the sidelines of the FIBAC 2025 event Monday, organised by the Federation of Indian Chambers of Commerce & Industry and the Indian Banks' Association.

According to reports in May, Airtel Payments Bank was eyeing an initial public offering on the back of a regulatory mandate after its net worth surpassed INR 500.00 billion last year. As per regulations, the digital payments bank must go public within three years of reaching that threshold.

When asked, Biswas said Airtel Payments Bank has not approached the Reserve Bank of India to seek a reduction in the statutory liquidity ratio or an increase in the deposit limit for payments banks. Media reports in July had said payments banks had sought relief from the regulator on these parameters.

Currently, digital payments banks are required to invest a minimum of 75% of their demand deposit balances in government securities or treasury bills that meet the SLR eligibility criteria with maturities of up to one year. The remaining 25% is typically held in current and time or fixed deposits with scheduled commercial banks for operational purposes and liquidity management.

Meanwhile, reports said digital payment banks have requested regulatory approval to disburse loans and accept deposits of up to INR 500,000, up from the existing limit of INR 200,000. Digital payment banks are not permitted to engage in lending activities.  End
