HYDERABAD – Cement prices are expected to rise in markets across south India Monday onwards as manufacturers gear up to recover part of their increased costs and cash in on the rising demand, multiple dealers and industry officials told Informist.
Southern states--Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, Tamil Nadu, and Karnataka--are expected to see a price hike of INR 20 to INR 30 per 50 kilogram bag, a senior official at a Hyderabad-based cement manufacturing company said on the condition of anonymity, adding that prices are seen stable in the northern and eastern regions.
"North and eastern markets have already taken a price hike around November and prices in those markets are stable. Due to intense competition, we are not expecting any fresh price hike at present," the official said. For southern states, the hike is scheduled from Monday, as companies want to recover increased costs such as packaging, warehousing and other logistics expenses, which have gone up in recent months, the official added.
According to a large dealer based in Chennai, cement companies are increasing prices by INR 20–INR 30 per bag effective Monday. The dealer said the hike may be absorbed by the market this time, as cement prices remained relatively low after price cuts following goods and services tax adjustments in September.
After the price hike, the 50 kg cement bag price will be in the range of INR 290–INR 350 in Telangana and Andhra Pradesh, depending on the brand and location. In Tamil Nadu and Karnataka, the 50 kg bag price may be in the range of INR 290–INR 340, dealers said. In northern and eastern markets, cement prices are in the range of INR 320–INR 370, depending on the market and brand, an industry official said.
"After GST rate cut adjustments, cement companies tried but failed to increase prices. Now, demand is improving and companies want to go for a hike, which may be implemented in full from Monday," he said.
Cement companies such as UltraTech Cement Ltd., Shree Cements Ltd., India Cements Ltd., ACC Ltd., Ramco Cements Ltd., JK Lakshmi Cements Ltd., Sagar Cements Ltd., NCL Industries Ltd., Orient Cement Ltd., and other privately held companies operating in the region have decided to go ahead with a price hike, dealers said.
Another cement industry official said that post-GST cut, price reductions were steep and companies faced difficulty in regaining pricing power, mainly in the trade segment, which accounts for nearly 50% of overall sales. Even now, implementing any price hike in the trade and institutional segments remains tougher compared with retail, the official said.
At 1415 IST, shares of UltraTech traded at INR 11,907, almost flat, while India Cement was up 2.5%, Dalmia Bharat was up 0.3%, Shree Cements was up 0.3%, NCL Industries was up 1.8% and Sagar Cements was up 1.2%. End
