NEW DELHI – The number of e-way bills generated in April rose 11.8% on year to 133.37 million, according to data from the Goods and Services Tax Network. At 11.8%, the on-year growth in e-way bill generation was the lowest in six months.

In March, e-way bills had hit an all-time high of 140.60 million, up 12.9% on year. An e-way bill is a GST document for the transport of goods worth more than INR 50,000 within or outside a state. The number of e-way bills generated is considered a lead indicator of economic activity and domestic trade.

An increase in e-way bills generally suggests GST collections would be robust the following month, as most transactions will be reflected in the next month's collections. India's GST collections grew 8.7% on year to INR 2.43 trillion in April.  End
