IMD sees early onset of monsoon over Andaman, Nicobar Islands by end of week

MUMBAI – Conditions are becoming favourable for the likely onset of southwest monsoon over parts of south Bay of Bengal, the Andaman Sea, and the Andaman and Nicobar Islands by the end of the week, the India Meteorological Department said. This would mark an early onset of southwest monsoon, as the normal date for the onset over the Andaman and Nicobar Islands is around May 22, based on the new rainfall criteria. Before 2020, the normal date for onset of monsoon over the region was around May 20, according to the weather department. The normal date of monsoon onset over mainland India is around Jun. 1, starting in Kerala.
The weather department has issued a red alert for west Rajasthan for heatwave to severe heatwave conditions along with warm night conditions till Thursday. A red alert is issued when extreme conditions are expected when a severe heatwave has persisted for more than two days, the department said.
Heatwave conditions to severe heatwave conditions are likely over west Rajasthan till Saturday. Severe heatwave conditions are likely to persist in some pockets of the region on Sunday and Monday, the weather bureau said. Heatwave conditions are also likely over parts of east Rajasthan and west Madhya Pradesh till Monday, over Vidarbha till Saturday, over central Maharashtra and Gujarat till Thursday, and over Marathwada till Friday, the bureau said.
Warm night conditions are likely to prevail in pockets of west Rajasthan till Monday, with instances of severe warm night conditions in some parts on Friday and Saturday, the weather department said. Warm night conditions are also expected over parts of east Rajasthan till Friday, the department said. Hot and humid weather conditions are likely over parts of coastal Karnataka till Wednesday.
A trough runs from an upper air cyclonic circulation over southwest Madhya Pradesh to Manipur, while another trough runs to the northeast of the country, the weather bureau said. These weather systems are expected to cause very heavy rainfall over parts of Assam and Meghalaya from Wednesday to Sunday, and over Arunachal Pradesh on Sunday and Monday, the bureau said. Heavy rainfall is also likely over most parts of northeast India till Sunday, the bureau said.
The low-pressure area over southwest Bay of Bengal is likely to become more marked during the next 48 hours, the weather department said. Under its influence, very heavy rainfall is expected over parts of sub-Himalayan West Bengal and Sikkim on Wednesday. Heavy rainfall is likely over the same regions till Thursday, and over parts of the Andaman and Nicobar Islands till Monday, the department said.
Thundersqualls with wind speeds reaching 50–60 kilometres per hour and gusting to 70 km per hour are expected over parts of Bihar on Wednesday and Jharkhand on Friday and Saturday. Light to moderate rainfall accompanied by thunderstorms, lightning, and gusty winds are expected over multiple parts of east India till Monday.
A western disturbance acting as an upper air cyclonic circulation lies over north Pakistan, and an upper air cyclonic circulation lies over west Rajasthan, the weather bureau said. Another upper air cyclonic circulation lies over north-central Uttar Pradesh, the bureau said. Under the influence of these weather systems, hailstorms are expected over parts of Himachal Pradesh and Uttarakhand till Wednesday. Thundersqualls with wind speeds reaching 50–60 km per hour and gusting to 70 km per hour are expected over parts of Jammu and Kashmir, Ladakh, Gilgit-Baltistan, and Muzaffarabad till Wednesday. Light to moderate rainfall or snowfall with thundershowers, lightning, and gusty winds are likely over several parts of northwest India till Saturday, the bureau said.
An upper air cyclonic circulation lies over south interior Karnataka, which is likely to cause heavy rainfall over parts of Tamil Nadu and Puducherry on Thursday and Friday, over Kerala till Friday, and over south interior Karnataka on Friday and Saturday, the weather department said. Hailstorms are expected over parts of north interior Karnataka on Thursday and Friday and over south interior Karnataka on Friday, the department said. Light to moderate showers accompanied by thunderstorms, lightning, and gusty winds are expected over most parts of south peninsular India till Saturday. End
