NEW DELHI – Prime Minister Narendra Modi is scheduled to visit the United Arab Emirates, the Netherlands, Sweden, Norway, and Italy from May 15 to May 20. While the visit to the UAE will be dominated by energy cooperation, bilateral trade, and regional geopolitical matters, the visits to the European nations are aimed at deepening trade and investment ties in the backdrop of the recently concluded free trade agreement with the European Union.

Modi will meet UAE President Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan on May 15, before proceeding to a two-day visit to the Netherlands where he will meet his counterpart Rob Jetten. The two leaders will engage on matters of defence, security, innovation, green hydrogen, semiconductors and a strategic partnership on water, according to the Ministry of External Affairs.

The Netherlands is one of India's largest trade destinations in Europe, with bilateral trade worth $27.8 billion in FY25, and India's fourth-largest investor with cumulative foreign direct investment of $55.6 billion.

During May 17-18, Modi will be in Sweden, where he will hold bilateral talks with his counterpart Ulf Kristersson to "explore new avenues of cooperation to enhance bilateral trade". Besides, collaboration in green transition, artificial intelligence, emerging technologies, start-ups, resilient supply chains, defence, space, climate action and people-to-people ties will also be discussed.

The prime minister will be in Norway on May 18-19 for the third India-Nordic Summit scheduled to be held in Oslo on May 19 in which the prime ministers of Denmark, Finland, Iceland, and Sweden will also participate. This is the first prime ministerial visit from India to Norway in 43 years.

Modi will hold bilateral talks with Norwegian Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Stre and also address the India-Norway Business and Research Summit. The country's Government Pension Fund has made investments of around $28 billion in the Indian equity market.

In the final leg of his visit, Modi will Italy on May 19-20 and hold talks with Italy's Prime Minister Georgia Meloni. "The visit takes place in the backdrop of a strong momentum in bilateral ties with both sides proactively implementing the Joint Strategic Action Plan 2025-2029," the Ministry of External Affairs said in a statement. Defence and security, clean energy, science and technology, and innovation will be the key areas of discussion.  End
