HYDERABAD/MUMBAI – Even though the biosimilar market is expected to see more products and companies, it is unlikely to see any meaningful competition that could hurt Biocon Ltd.'s current sales trend for the next five years, Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer Shreehas Tambe said Thursday.
Tambe, in a post-earnings press conference, said companies such as Biocon, Sandoz Group AG, and Celltrion Inc. have an edge compared to the big players entering into biosimilars by acquiring products or companies. The biosimilar segment is the key revenue driver for Bengaluru-based Biocon. For the June quarter, the company reported a 16% on-year rise in its biosimilar business to INR 28.6 billion.
Tambe said there has been a regulatory streamlining recently, but only two big foreign players, Amgen Inc. and Pfizer Inc., were present in the biosimilar space with separate arms, while Merck & Co. Inc. entered and left the market. For Biocon, the recent launch of ophthalmic drug Yesafili, which is the biosimilar version of Aflibercept, and the launch of Denosumab are expected to contribute significantly to sales in coming quarters, he said.
Limited exclusivity for Yesafili is likely to help with better sales numbers for a few months, he said. Biopharma business accounts for 83% of the company's total sales. Tambe said the launch of glucagon-like peptide-1 category drug Liraglutide in the US is a big boost for Biocon. Initial sales numbers of this drug added to the June quarter earnings, he said, adding that it will have meaningful sales in the quarters to follow.
Tambe said the glucagon-like peptide-1 category has a range of products with a decade-long market potential, as more and more markets are expected to go off patent in the years to come. The company is working on a few other products, he said, declining to specify any drug names.
The Biocon management is confident of achieving better sales growth in Oct-Mar compared to Apr-Sept. The company is also expecting traction in its research services subsidiary Syngene International Ltd. in Oct-Mar, as the new management is expected to deliver stronger growth. Syngene accounts for nearly 17% of Biocon's consolidated sales.
For the June quarter, Biocon reported consolidated net profit of INR 1.41 billion on revenues of INR 43.36 billion. Thursday, its shares ended at INR 436.60 apiece on the National Stock Exchange, up 2.7% from Wednesday. End
