The rupee ended sharply lower against the dollar Tuesday as importers persistently purchased dollars on fears that the Indian currency may depreciate further owing to the escalation of tension between India and Pakistan, dealers said. The rupee was further weighed as a few oil marketing companies purchased dollars to take advantage of the relatively lower dollar/rupee levels earlier in the day, dealers said.
