NEW DELHI – The government has begun collecting price data for the proposed new series for Wholesale Price Index, Producer Price Index, and Index of Industrial Production from manufacturing units, the commerce ministry said in a notification Wednesday.

The ministry directed the collection of price information for the current WPI series with 2011-12 as the base year and also price and production information for forthcoming series of WPI, PPI, and IIP. The price data will be collected in a survey that started in July, and will continue till the next base year revision.

The government is working on the revision of key macroeconomic indicators such as CPI, GDP, WPI and IIP. The statistics ministry is likely to release the new GDP and IIP series with 2022-23 base year and a new CPI series with 2024 as the base year in early 2026.

The WPI is released by the commerce ministry, which has set up a working group to revise the WPI base year to 2022-23 and suggest a commodity basket and the methodology to compute WPI. The working group has also been tasked with suggesting a commodity basket for a new PPI, which will also have 2022-23 base year. The current WPI series was adopted in 2017, when the base year changed from 2004-05.

The survey notified by the commerce ministry will collect price and production inflation for new WPI, PPI, and IIP series starting from April 2022 till the next base year revision. As per the notification, statistics officers can inspect business records of a unit such as Goods and Services Tax bills, e-way bills, and balance sheets. End
