NEW DELHI – Discussions on a free trade agreement currently underway between India and New Zealand in New Delhi will conclude Friday. The talks began Monday. The next round of negotiations will be held in November, the commerce ministry said Wednesday.

New Zealand and India restarted talks on a free trade agreement in March, a decade after the first round of negotiations fell through. The two nations had first started working on the agreement in April 2010, but the talks stalled in February 2015 because of disagreements over market access and trade priorities. The two sides have held three rounds of talks so far.

India will hold the next round of negotiations for a free trade agreement with Peru from Nov. 3 to Nov. 5, the commerce ministry said. India has also scheduled the next round of negotiations with another Latin American nation, Chile, from Oct. 27 to Oct. 31.

Peru is the first Latin American country to discuss a free trade agreement with India. India imported goods worth $4.98 billion from Peru in the financial year 2024-25 (Apr-Mar), which was not even 1% of India's total imports for the year. The top goods imported by India from Peru included precious metals, iron and steel, and aluminium.

Currently, India has preferential trade pacts with Chile and the MERCOSUR bloc comprising Argentina, Brazil, Bolivia, Uruguay, and Paraguay. The ministry is in discussions with Chile to expand the preferential agreement into a free trade agreement. India's total trade with Chile in FY25 was $3.76 billion, with exports amounting to $1.15 billion and imports to $2.60 billion.  End
