AHMEDABAD - Freight traffic handled by major Indian ports in the financial year 2025-26 (Apr-Mar) rose 7.06% to 915.17 million tonnes, data released by the Indian Ports Association showed. This was mainly because of rise in crude oil and petroleum products cargo, which accounted for nearly one-third of the total cargo handled at all the major ports across country.

The cargo handled by major ports in FY26 was higher than the target of 904 million tonnes set by government.

Crude oil and petroleum products cargoes rose over 7.25% to 272.95 million tonnes in FY26. The volume of liquids, other than crude and petroleum products, rose over 3% to 33.54 million tonnes.

Other than crude oil and other liquid cargo, container traffic increased 10.07% to 213 million tonnes. Raw fertiliser cargo rose 5.86% to 10.64 million tonnes in FY26. The volume of finished fertilisers imported in FY26 jumped up 29.34% to 12.89 million tonnes. The cargo volume of thermal coal rose 1.67% to 129.51 million tonnes and coking coal rose 11.87% to 66.25 million tonnes in FY26. Miscellaneous traffic was up 6.84% at a little over 125.82 million tonnes. Meanwhile, the volume of iron ore pellets rose 1.33% to 50.57 million tonnes.

Among the ports, Deendayal Port at Kandla handled the highest traffic in FY26 at 160.11 million tonnes, followed closely by Paradip Port at 156.45 million tonnes, and Jawaharlal Nehru Port Authority at 102.01 million tonnes. In terms of growth rate, Mormugao Port Authority recorded the highest increase at 15.91%, followed by Kolkata Dock System at 14.28% and Jawaharlal Nehru Port Authority at 10.74%, reflecting improved efficiency and rising cargo volumes.
