MUMBAI – Fading hopes of a US-Iran ceasefire in the near-term and weakness in the information technology sector dragged the equity market lower for the fourth straight session on Tuesday, with headline indices closing nearly 2% lower. US President Donald Trump's rejection of Iran's proposal to end the war dampened market sentiment and pushed crude oil prices back above $100 a barrel. IT stocks slumped during the session after US-based artificial intelligence company OpenAI announced the launch of a new company to help businesses build and deploy AI systems.
The Nifty 50 ended 1.8% lower at 23379.55, down 436.30 points. The BSE Sensex settled 1.9% lower at 74559.24, down 1456.04 points.
All the broader market indices ended in the negative territory. Small-cap indices ended 3.0–3.2% lower after snapping a winning streak of five straight sessions on Monday. Mid-cap indices fell over 2?ch during the session.
Sectoral indices showed varied degrees of weakness during the session. While some indices declined marginally, others fell by over 4%. The Nifty Realty was the worst-performing sectoral index, ending over 4% lower. Investor nervousness rose for a third straight day, with the India VIX settling about 4% higher at 19.2800.
IT stocks were the major losers in the Nifty 50 index following OpenAI's Monday announcement of a new venture. Tech Mahindra, HCL Technologies, Tata Consultancy Services, and Wipro were among the top losers on the Nifty 50 index, ending around 4% lower each. The new venture is expected to expand OpenAI's ability to embed engineers specialised in frontier artificial intelligence deployment, known as forward-deployed engineers, into organisations working on complex problems in demanding environments, OpenAI said. The Nifty IT index ended nearly 4% lower, down for the second session.
Shares of JSW Energy ended 7% lower after the company's consolidated net profit declined 9% year-on-year to INR 3.72 billion. The stock was the worst-hit in the Nifty 200 index. UPL, which fell 6%, was the next biggest loser in the Nifty 200. The company's consolidated net profit for the reporting quarter rose 18% on-year to INR 10.61 billion, but missed the Street's estimate of INR 12.15 billion.
Gold jewellery companies ended lower after Prime Minister Narendra Modi urged people to defer purchases of gold to save
foreign exchange. Shares of Kalyan Jewellers India and P N Gadgil Jewellers ended 5-6% lower Tuesday.
Shares of Billionbrains Garage Ventures ended over 5% lower as the mandatory six-month lock-in period after the company's initial public offering ended Tuesday. The stock, which saw multiple large deals on both the NSE and BSE, closed lower for the fifth consecutive session, shedding over 17% over the period.
Shriram Finance was a key laggard in the Nifty 50 index. The stock, which fell around 5%, ended lower for the third straight session, shedding over 8% over the period.
Only three constituents of the Nifty 50 index ended higher during the session. Oil and Natural Gas Corp. ended nearly 5% higher, while Hindalco Industries and State Bank of India closed 0.1-1.8% higher. Shares of Oil and Natural Gas Corp. and Oil India surged after the government slashed royalties on crude oil and natural gas production. Oil India ended nearly 8% higher for the session. While ONGC was the top gainer in the Nifty 50, Oil India was the best performer in the Nifty 200 and Nifty 500 indices.
Paradeep Phosphates was one of the top gainers in the Nifty 500 index, ending over 4% higher. The stock closed higher after the company said its plans to double the phosphoric acid capacity to 1 million tonnes per annum were on track.
