NEW DELHI – India's foreign exchange reserves rose $963 million on week to $672.59 billion as of Jun. 19, because of a jump in the value of gold holdings, data released by the Reserve Bank of India Friday showed. This is the first time the reserves have risen in three weeks, and the increase is the largest in six weeks.

In the week ended Jun. 12, foreign exchange reserves had declined to the lowest level since Mar. 28, 2025. The Indian currency rose 0.8% in the week ended Jun. 19 after the US and Iran agreed to an interim peace deal to end hostilities in West Asia and reopen the Strait of Hormuz.

The value of the central bank's gold holdings increased $4.11 billion on week to $107.93 billion as of Jun. 19. The rise in the gold holdings was also the largest in six weeks. Foreign currency assets, however, fell $3.07 billion on week to $541.22 billion, the lowest since Feb. 14, 2025.

Calculated in dollar terms, the RBI's foreign exchange reserves also reflect the impact of the appreciation or depreciation of currencies other than the dollar, such as the euro, the pound sterling, and the yen, held by the central bank.  End

US$1 = INR 94.39
