NEW DELHI – US President Donald Trump said the world's biggest military power would be known as "The Guardian of the Hormuz Strait" from now on and would charge a fee to provide safety and security in the region. For this, the US would be reimbursed 20% of the cost of all cargo shipped through the strait as the cost of protection, Trump said in a post on Truth Social. The process of collecting the fee would begin immediately, he said.
"The Hormuz Strait is OPEN, and will remain OPEN, with or without Iran," Trump said on his social media website. "We are reinstating THE IRANIAN BLOCKADE, so named because it is only stopping Iran's ships or customers from entering or leaving. All other countries will have fair and open use of the Strait."
The US commander-in-chief's rhetoric comes after increased tensions in West Asia and a flare-up of hostilities between the two countries. The US has fired missiles at several sites in Iran over the past week, ostensibly in response to Tehran's attacks on commercial shipping through the Strait of Hormuz. The two sides have targeted military installations across the region in recent days, including over the weekend.
Iran maintains the strait is part of its territorial waters and it has the ability to levy a toll on passage through it as part of the memorandum of understanding signed with the US in June to end the war in West Asia. Trump last week said he considered the agreement over after the US and Iran exchanged strikes. In response to Iran blocking "hostile" vessels passing through the strait, the US had earlier enforced a month-long blockade of Iranian ports. Before the US and Israel attacked Iran at the end of February, a fifth of the world's daily crude oil requirement passed through the strait, most of it bound for Asia, with no fee or toll paid to any country. UN treaties designate the strait as "international waters".
Brent Crude futures for September delivery briefly topped the key $80 per barrel mark after Trump's comments on the view that the conflict would escalate further due to the proposed blockade and levy. Crude oil supplies had begun to normalise after the Jun. 17 agreement but transit has become strained again after the Iranian and US attacks. End
