MUMBAI – The spread and intensity of rainfall over parts of west India are expected to rise over the next few days due to the presence of a trough, which stretches from an upper air cyclonic circulation over the Bay of Bengal to the northeast Arabian Sea, the India Meteorological Department said. Heavy to very heavy rainfall with spells of extremely heavy showers are expected over parts of central Maharashtra on Wednesday and over Gujarat region till Wednesday, for which the weather department has issued a red alert.

A red alert indicates rainfall exceeding 204.5 millimetres in 24 hours and is the highest level of weather warning.

The presence of the trough is also expected to cause very heavy rainfall over parts of Konkan and Goa till Wednesday, over central Maharashtra on Thursday, and over Gujarat region on Thursday and from Saturday to Monday, the weather bureau said. Heavy showers are likely over most parts of west India till Monday, the bureau said.

The presence of the trough, along with several upper air cyclonic circulations, is expected to keep monsoon conditions active over central and adjoining north peninsular India and east and northeast India over the next three to four days, the weather department said. Very heavy rainfall is expected over parts of Madhya Pradesh till Wednesday and over multiple parts of northwest India till Saturday.

Heavy showers with thunderstorms and lightning are likely over parts of Madhya Pradesh, Vidarbha, and Chhattisgarh till Saturday, the weather bureau said. Similar weather is expected over several parts of northwest India till Monday. In northeast India, heavy showers are likely to continue till Monday, while thunderstorms and lightning could persist till Friday, the bureau said. In east India, heavy rainfall accompanied by thunderstorms, lightning, and gusty winds are likely over most parts till Monday.

Rainfall activity is expected to remain subdued over south peninsular India over the next seven days due to the absence of weather systems over the region, the weather department said. Light to moderate rainfall is expected over many parts of the region till Monday. Strong surface winds are seen over parts of Andhra Pradesh and Karnataka till Friday and over Telangana till Monday, the department said.  End
