MUMBAI – InterGlobe Aviation Ltd., the owner of budget carrier IndiGo, remained in loss for the second consecutive quarter as rising aviation turbine fuel prices, the sharp depreciation of the rupee against the dollar, and the war in West Asia weighed on its profitability in the June quarter. The company reported a loss for the June quarter for the first time since 2022.

The company posted a loss of INR 3.82 billion for the reporting quarter, compared with a profit of INR 21.61 billion a year earlier. The company missed the consensus estimate of a profit of INR 12.30 billion by a wide margin. In fact, none of the nine estimates available with Informist had forecast a loss fr InterGlobe Aviation. The company's revenue from operations grew almost 20% on year to INR 245.84 billion, a little higher than the consensus estimate of INR 242.64 billion.

The company reported earnings before interest, tax, depreciation, amortisation, and rentals of INR 38.33 billion for the quarter under review, down 33% on year. Analysts had expected this metric to be INR 45.98 billion.

"The first quarter was shaped by a volatile operating environment, with elevated fuel costs and network-related constraints in the Middle East (West Asia) impacting profitability," the company's Managing Director Rahul Bhatia said in a press release. "We remain focused on managing capacity prudently, maintaining cost discipline, and responding to market conditions with agility. However, the pressure of fuel costs and rupee depreciation resulted in a loss of around 2 billion rupees for the quarter," Bhatia said.

InterGlobe Aviation's total expenses for the quarter under review rose 35% on year to INR 260.04 billion, sharply higher than the growth in revenue. This was primarily on the back of aircraft fuel expenses, which surged a staggering 86% on year and 63% on quarter to INR 108.33 billion.

For the June quarter, InterGlobe Aviation reported a foreign exchange impact of INR 2.32 billion, compared with INR 1.71 billion a year ago. This included a forex hedging loss of INR 1.50 billion. Excluding the forex exchange impact, the company's EBITDAR for the June quarter would have been INR 40.65 billion, while its loss would have narrowed to INR 56 million.

OPERATIONAL METRICS

InterGlobe Aviation's passenger ticket revenue for the June quarter was INR 218.79 billion, up 23% on year, while its ancillary revenues improved 14% to INR 24.53 billion. Its revenue per available seat kilometre increased 17% on year to INR 5.66, while its yield grew 21% to INR 6.04 per kilometre. While the former metric is used to measure how much money the airline generates for every kilometre a single seat is flown, irrespective of whether the seat is paid for or not, the latter metric measures the average revenue an airline earns per paying passenger for every kilometre flown.

Cost per available seat kilometre for the reporting quarter rose 33% on year to INR 5.71. Excluding the impact of fuel prices and foreign exchange, the metric would have been INR 3.20, up 11% on year.

CAPACITY EXPANSION

The company had a fleet of 432 aircraft as of Jun. 30, compared to 441 a quarter ago and 416 a year ago. InterGlobe Aviation's owned fleet has jumped fourfold from a year ago to 36 aircraft. However, aircraft on damp lease have moderated to seven from 11 a year ago.

The airline's current fleet includes 26 A320 CEOs, 174 A320 NEOs, 176 A321 NEOs, 3 A321XLR, 44 ATRs, 3 A321 freighters, and 6 B787 aircraft. The company operated at a peak of 2,298 daily flights during the quarter, flying between 97 domestic and 46 international destinations.

InterGlobe Aviation expects its capacity in the traditionally weak September quarter to remain broadly flat year-on-year. This also factors in the operational uncertainty stemming from the ongoing war in West Asia. This capacity, measured in terms of available seat kilometres, reflects lower aircraft utilisation. "As we move beyond this seasonally weaker quarter, we expect aircraft utilisation to progressively increase," the company said in the press release.

As of Jun. 30, the company had a cash balance of INR 528.85 billion, up from INR 494.06 billion a year ago. Its debt increased 19% on-year to INR 815.31 billion as of Jun. 30.

Thursday, the company's shares closed 1.8% lower at INR 5,023.50 on the National Stock Exchange. InterGlobe Aviation reported its June quarter financials after market hours. End
