MUMBAI – Foreign portfolio investors net sold Indian government bonds worth INR 19.7 billion through the Fully Accessible Route Friday, on a day when near-month Brent crude oil futures topped $100 per barrel for the first time in nearly two months. This marks the heftiest single-day gilt sales through this route since Apr. 2, according to data from Clearing Corp. of India. Over 82% of the sales Friday were in the five-year benchmark 6.36%, 2031 bond, at INR 16.17 billion. As of Thursday, FPIs owned nearly 16% of the bond's outstanding amount of INR 1.02 trillion, which dropped to about 14% Friday.

On Apr. 2, the first day of the Indian financial year, FPIs had net sold gilts worth INR 40.33 billion through this route. Foreign portfolio investors have been net buyers of gilts since the Centre and Reserve Bank of India unveiled tax cuts and other incentives to attract FPI investment on Jun. 5. FPIs have net bought gilts worth INR 524.43 billion since then till Friday through the Fully Accessible Route, taking their total gilt holdings through this route to INR 3.77 trillion. FPIs have been net sellers of gilts for only three of these 35 trading sessions, in spite of the renewed conflict in West Asia. Traders expect FPIs to remain net buyers of gilts in the near-term due to expectations of the inclusion of Indian sovereign bonds in Bloomberg's flagship Global Aggregate Index. Traders expect Bloomberg to publish its review latest by September.  End
