NEW DELHI – The Reserve Bank of India's net outstanding sales of dollar-rupee forward contracts at the end of June eased slightly from a record high hit the previous month as the central bank trimmed its dollar liabilities for the near-tenure, data from the RBI showed late Friday. The RBI's net outstanding foreign exchange forward book shrank to $103.33 billion at the end of June, down from the record high of $106.65 billion at the end of May.
Of the total forward book, short positions with maturity of up to one month fell the most and were at $10.18 billion at the end of June, down $9.64 billion from a month ago. The RBI's short positions for the tenure of one-three months were at $5.73 billion at June-end, down $3.13 billion from a month ago.
However, the outstanding short positions increased by $2.52 billion in the tenure of three months to a year to $24.42 billion at the end of June. And the short positions in long-term forwards with a maturity of over a year increased to $64.21 billion as of June-end, up $8.14 billion on month, reflecting flows absorbed under the central bank's concessional dollar-rupee buy-sell swap facilities introduced to encourage banks to mobilise foreign-currency non-resident deposits and overseas borrowings by lenders and state-run companies.
Between Jun. 8 and July-end, the policy measures announced by the RBI have attracted inflows worth over $40 billion, driven largely by FCNR(B) deposits by overseas Indians. The net position of the RBI's forward book is the difference between its outstanding gross purchases and gross sales of forward contracts. During June, the rupee rose almost 0.4%, thanks to the RBI's capital inflow measures and a drop in crude oil prices.
The central bank's long forward positions were at $1.21 billion at the end of June after being nil in the previous month. Details of the RBI's outstanding forward book as on Jun. 30 are as follows. All figures in billion dollars:
