NEW DELHI – India's foreign exchange reserves jumped to a 24-week high of $716.91 billion as of Aug. 14, data released by the Reserve Bank of India Friday showed. The reserves rose by $9.91 billion from a week ago. The growth in foreign exchange reserves, which has been rising since Jul. 3, was mainly driven by an increase in foreign currency assets.

Foreign currency assets rose $7.23 billion from a week ago to $581.85 billion as of Aug. 14, while the value of the central bank's gold holdings rose by $2.68 billion on week to $111.42 billion.

The sharp rise is due to inflows into the swap schemes the Reserve Bank of India announced in June to attract foreign capital. RBI's measures have attracted a total of $56.85 billion as of Aug. 13, the central bank said last week. Foreign exchange reserves have risen about $35 billion since the first week of June.

The rupee depreciated 0.2% against the dollar in the week ended Aug. 14. However, persistent dollar sales by the central bank limited the domestic currency's fall, according to dealers.

Calculated in dollar terms, the RBI's foreign exchange reserves also reflect the impact of the appreciation or depreciation of currencies other than the dollar, such as the euro, the pound sterling, and the yen, held by the central bank.  End
